No particular ribosome-like proteins have been identified to interact with preRNAs to date, despite the possibility that the locations where these ribosome-like factors bind are subsequently occupied by the appropriate ribosomal proteins. In other words, certain RNA recognition motifs in the sequences of ribosomal pre-proteins can be the source of their RNA-binding characteristics. Specific protein-protein interactions amongst ribosomal precursor factors have been found, while the precise RNA targets of pre-ribosomal proteins remain unclear. Three types of protein-protein interactions in ribosome are identified: those that specify the pre-ribosome's subcomplexes; those that are tuned to engage with particular partners; and those that are direct physical contacts that direct the pre-ribosome's construction.
